Born and raised in San Jose, California, Brandi Chastain is a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and a two-time Olympic gold-medalist. Chastain’s iconic celebration of her game-winning goal in the 1999 World Cup against China, in which she tore off her jersey and raised her clenched fists victoriously, made the covers of Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, and Newsweek. She began her career at the University of California Berkley where she was named an All-American and Freshman of the Year by Soccer America before moving on to Santa Clara University. Chastain played internationally from 1988 to 2004, primarily as defender and midfielder, before playing for club teams until 2010. After her playing career, Chastain became a soccer coach and sports broadcaster for NBC, ABC, and ESPN. In 2016, Chastain pledged to donate her brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation for research and continues to use her platform to speak out for concussion and CTE awareness.
